Kalamata nestles between the foothills of Mount Taygetos, protected by its great mass. At the same time the city is open to the caress of the sea, set in the depths of the Messinia Gulf.
The beginning of life is in the miss of time. It all started long before the Homer’s time, when we meet Dioclis, the ruler of Phares, this was the ancient name of the city.
During the Byzantine and post-byzantine period Kalamata experienced important growth. It became, at the church of St Apostles, in the Historical center, the starting point of freedom when, on March 23 1821, the Greek patriots first vowed to die for independence and composed the first revolutionary proclamation towards the west.
Legend and history have provoked the interest of travelers writing about the area and its beauty attracted the attention of talented contemporary artists who have left some admirable works to Greece’s art heritage.
The modern city is attractive, full of natural beauties, tourists’ interests and important cultural structure and infrastructure which make Kalamata a model of cultural decentralization.
Every year, in July we organize the Kalamata International Dance Festival with thousand of visitors all over the world, crowning event of the artistic life of the city and throughout the year many performances, concerts, art exhibitions take place. Particular attention is paid to cultural education. More than 1.200 students, children, teenagers and adults, are initiated, every year, to the art in the Municipality’s schools. All activities are oriented towards the cultivation of a profound artistic awareness and love for the arts.
